91st Town Hall Calls for State Trust Land Reform
17

The 91st Arizona Town Hall recommended the enactment of state trust land reform and adequate funding and authority for the State Land Department to become a true asset manager.

Participants considered "Land Use: Challenges and Choices for the 21st Century" and reached consensus that current systems of planning and land-use regulation are inadequate to address Arizona's rapid growth.

Collaborative planning among all levels of government-local, regional, state, tribal, and federal-is crucial, particularly in managing infrastructure, transportation, education, environmental concerns, energy, and natural and water resources.  The Town Hall also recommended the adoption of diversified revenue sources to support long-range smart growth planning and implementation.

Participants' familiarity with the comprehensive background report prepared by Arizona State University contributed to lively and detailed discussions.  Bruce Babbitt, who served as Secretary of the Interior from 1993-2001 and as Arizona's governor from 1978-1987, and Arthur "Chris" Nelson, an expert on urban affairs and planning from Virginia Tech addressed the Town Hall on land-use topics.

"You folks accomplish an incredible amount on a really lean budget!"  That comment from a community leader familiar with multiple Arizona non-profits drove home the point that we could do even more with greater resources, particularly in the areas of education and follow-up on Town Hall recommendations.

As we approach the end of the year, please consider an extra gift to Arizona Town Hall along with your membership renewal.  We guarantee that your dollars will be used efficiently to continue creating solutions for Arizona's challenges in health care, land use, education, housing, transportation, and other critical issues.  Thank you in advance for your end-of-year support.
