Effort underway to bring providers to rural and underserved areas
In programs held around the state to follow up on the spring Town Hall on Health Care, audience members were asked to participate in a "mini" Town Hall discussion. The question posed was: What can we, the people in this room, do to improve health care in Arizona? Follow this link to view consensus statements prepared from those discussions.
Town Hall discussions often inspire participants to take immediate action. These programs were no exception. If you are interested in participating in an effort to bring health care providers from the larger metropolitan areas to rural and underserved areas through a program that relies on volunteers interested in preventative efforts, contact Tara Jackson at tarajackson@aztownhall.org. |

State Leaders Discuss Town Hall Recommendations
Last week, state leaders took the stage to discuss recommendations from the spring 2007 Town Hall on Health Care as part of the inaugural Shirley Agnos Arizona Town Hall Lecture Series. The two-part program, which was held in the newly opened Phoenix Medical School, featured a round table discussion and a presentation by Dr. Ted Shortliffe, the Dean of the Medical School.
Participating in the round table discussion were: Senate President Tim Bee, Betsey Bayless, Executive Director of the Maricopa County Health District; January Contreras, the Governor's Policy Advisor for Health and Sandy Gibson, Executive Vice President for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona. Panel participants responded to questions posed by Moderator Jose Cardenas and fielded comments from the audience.
Dean Shortliffe provided a picture presentation of plans for the campus of the Downtown Medical School and addressed how the proposed growth of the medical school would impact discussions held at the Town Hall.
Sponsored by the University of Arizona, in conjunction with Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University, the event was covered by Channel 12 News, KUAT and KAET.
The program also highlighted the recent release of the final report from the spring 2007 Town Hall on Health Care. The University of Arizona, under the guidance of Marshall Worden, coordinated the background report which is included as part of the final report. The final report provides an unprecedented guide for understanding and improving health care in Arizona. Town Hall members will receive a copy of the report by mail within the next week; additional copies are available through the Town Hall office. |
